Diseases in Darkest Dungeon 2 are random persistent negative status effects similar to Quirks, that are usually contracted by Heroes from enemy attacks. When a hero contracts a disease, it will apply negative status effects or debuffs which can only be cured by using certain Items or by visiting a Nurse at a Field Hospital when you are traveling. The list of diseases that a hero can acquire becomes available in the game as you increase the player profile level. This page covers all types of Diseases that a Hero can contract in Darkest Dungeon 2 and what can be done to remove or resist them.

Where can I find the status of contracted Diseases?

The hero status is where you can view stats, relationships, view and equip skills, see the hero's quirks and diseases, equip trinkets, and more.

Regardless of which tab you're on, you can always see the hero's stats, quirks, diseases, and trinkets. Hover your mouse over any stat to view a tooltip that shows any active buffs or debuffs.

How do I contract a Disease?

Diseases are normally acquired through combat via enemy attacks. There are certain enemy types that focus on dealing disease damage, being prepared and having an item that can resist or cure a disease will help you in combat. You can suffer from multiple Diseases at the same time. Diseases last until removed.

How do I cure a Disease?

Diseases can be cured by visiting a Nurse at the Field Hospital, you will encounter a Field Hospital when you are traveling. While traveling with your Stagecoach, you will see on your map a plus icon, indicating there is a Field Hospital on that path. Curing a disease is not free, you will need to pay the required amount of relics to permanently remove a disease. Remember that Diseases can only be cured once the player chooses to do so.

There are also certain items that a hero can use to remove or resist Diseases. These items are rare so you shouldn't count it, your best bet would just be to visit a Field Hospital to permanently cure the disease.

Can I improve the resistance of Diseases?

Yes, there are certain items in Darkest Dungeon 2 that can help in resisting certain Diseases. For example, there is an Inn Item called Wax Innoculant, where the selected hero will receive a Disease status effect resistance until the next Inn is reached. However, you cannot use this Inn Item when your selected hero has a Squeamish negative status effect in place. An Inn Item called Slime Mold can restore your hero's HP by 10% but will receive -10 Disease Resist when this item is used, so consider whether you would want to restore your hero's health first, or get rid of the disease. There is also a Combat Item called Holy Water, where the selected hero can remove a single negative token, however, when the hero has an active Combo token, it will remove all existing negative tokens on the selected hero, therefore removing the disease status effects permanently.

There is also a Skill that can help in resisting the disease status effect that is exclusive to the Plague Doctor class in Darkest Dungeon 2 called Ounce of Prevention. It is a support skill that you must consider to have equipped as it increases the resistance of the whole team against diseases and DoT effects. It is a team-wide support skill that targets the whole team. In order to use this skill, the Plague Doctor is required to be standing on team ranks 3 or 4. This skill has a cooldown of 3 rounds before it can be used again, so use it wisely.
